Rovaniemi or Levi? Which Lapland Base Has the Tours You Want

Choosing between these two is usually presented as a lifestyle question, resort versus city. In practice it is a supply question. Rovaniemi has far more operators competing, and that shows up in choice, in departure times and in price.

Rovaniemi or Levi?

Rovaniemi, for most trips, and the tour counts make the case. Eighteen of the twenty-four tours listed on this site depart from Rovaniemi and five from Levi. Levi earns its place only if you are skiing or if you specifically want darker skies.

Why does the tour count matter so much?

Because more operators competing means more departure times, more formats and keener prices. In Levi you are choosing from five listings; in Rovaniemi from eighteen, including the most-reviewed activity in Finnish Lapland.

The review counts tell the same story. Rovaniemi's flagship snowmobile safari carries 2,278 GetYourGuide reviews and its leading husky safari 1,568. Levi's best-reviewed husky safari here sits at 502 and its aurora tour at 189. Those are not bad numbers, and they are an order of magnitude smaller.

Both sit inside the same season, which Visit Finland puts at roughly November to May for reliable Lapland snow. Fewer reviews is not a quality warning. It is simply less information to go on before you commit, and fewer alternatives if your first choice is sold out on your date.

When is Levi actually the better choice?

When someone in your group wants to ski. That is the one thing Levi does that Rovaniemi genuinely cannot, and it solves a real problem for mixed groups.

Ski in the morning, husky safari in the afternoon, no long transfer between them. If your party splits between skiers and non-skiers, that convenience is worth more than a wider activity list.

The second case is darkness. Levi sits about 100 km north of the Arctic Circle with less light pollution than a city, so aurora conditions are somewhat better on your doorstep. Somewhat, not transformatively. The Finnish Meteorological Institute puts the aurora at roughly half of dark, cloudless nights across Lapland's ski resorts generally, and Rovaniemi's tours exist precisely to drive you out of the city light. What about flights?

Rovaniemi has four direct UK routes for the 2026/27 winter. Levi is served by Kittilä, which has fewer, though easyJet is adding new UK services to both airports.

What can you actually book in each?

The activity mix differs as much as the count. Rovaniemi has every category represented; Levi has huskies and aurora and not much else on this site.

Can you do both?

Yes, over a week, and it works well. What it costs you is a transfer, and Lapland distances are longer than the map suggests.

A sensible split is a few nights in Rovaniemi for the village and the widest activity choice, then north to Levi for skiing and darker skies. Under five nights it is not worth the moving time, and you would be better off picking one and going deeper.
