Neither is better in the abstract. A charter break removes every decision, which is worth real money to a family with small children and a week of annual leave. Booking direct costs less and lets you choose your own aurora nights, which matters if the lights are the reason you are going.

One thing the charter operators are right about. If you book everything yourself, nobody is holding your hand when a storm cancels the snowmobile safari and the aurora tour on the same night. Most listings here cancel free up to 24 hours ahead, which covers you financially, but rebooking is your problem. That is the actual trade.

Two separate seasons overlap here and they are not the same length. Snow cover in Rovaniemi runs roughly November to May, per Visit Finland. The aurora season is longer at both ends: late August to early April, per Visit Finland and the Santa Claus Village information service. The official photos and videos of that meeting are sold separately. What a Santa Claus Village tour buys you is the transport from Rovaniemi, a guide, and usually a bundled activity such as a reindeer or husky ride.
No, and you should be wary of anything implying otherwise. The aurora season runs from late August to early April in Finnish Lapland, and clear skies plus solar activity decide the rest. Some listings offer their own money-back or free-repeat promise if nothing appears, which is a real commercial guarantee from that operator, stated on the listing. It is not a guarantee of a sighting.
Because people rate the weather. An aurora tour with 1,588 reviews at 4.0 has taken far more travellers out than one with 348 reviews at 4.9, and a share of its low reviews say some version of "we saw nothing", which no guide could have changed. Read the written reviews for whether the guide drove to clearer skies and kept people warm, because that is the part the tour controls.
A driving licence is required to drive a snowmobile yourself in Finland, and there is a minimum age. We have deliberately not printed the exact rule here because we could not confirm it against Traficom, the Finnish transport authority, and a requirement this consequential should come from the regulator rather than a tour blog.
