Rovaniemi vs Levi vs Saariselkä: where to base yourself
Pick the wrong base and you spend your week in a minibus. This is the comparison we get asked for most, and the answer genuinely differs depending on why you are going.

Rovaniemi: the default, and usually the right one
Eighteen of the twenty-four tours on this site leave from Rovaniemi, which tells you most of what you need to know. It has the airport, the Santa Claus Village, the widest choice of operators and, because of that competition, generally the keenest prices. For a first Lapland trip of three or four nights it is hard to argue for anywhere else.
The honest downside is that it is a city, so the aurora tours have to drive you away from its light before anything useful happens. That is why the good ones run late and cover distance, and why an aurora tour that has you back by nine is not really trying. If the northern lights are the entire reason for the trip, note that you are starting from the most light-polluted of the three.
One thing people get wrong: because Rovaniemi sits almost exactly on the Arctic Circle, its polar night lasts only a couple of days rather than weeks. December here means a few hours of low blue light, not permanent darkness. Some people find that a relief and others feel short-changed.
Start with the Santa Claus Village tours or the snowmobile safaris, which is where Rovaniemi's depth of choice shows most.
Levi: for anyone who also wants to ski
Levi is a purpose-built ski resort in Kittilä, roughly 100 km north of the Arctic Circle, with its own airport nearby. If your group splits between skiers and activity people, it solves a real problem: ski in the morning, husky safari in the afternoon, without a long transfer between them.
The activity market is smaller than Rovaniemi's, which shows in the numbers. Our Levi husky and aurora listings carry review counts in the hundreds where Rovaniemi's run into the thousands. Fewer reviews is not a quality warning, but it is less information to go on.
Skies are darker than Rovaniemi's, and it is far enough north that the winter days are noticeably shorter. No Santa Claus Village, which matters if you are travelling with children who are expecting one.
Saariselkä and Inari: the aurora specialists
Further north again, past Ivalo. Genuinely dark, genuinely quiet, and where you go when you have done Rovaniemi and want the sky rather than the attractions. Weeks of polar night rather than days, and a much better chance across a multi-night stay.
Getting there is the cost. You fly to Ivalo, usually via Helsinki, then transfer. Restaurants and shops are limited and seasonal. There is no Santa Claus Village and no ski resort of Levi's size. For a first trip with children this is the wrong choice; for a couple whose whole plan is aurora, it is the right one.
How many nights you need
If the aurora matters, the single most useful thing you can do is give yourself more than one night. Any given night can be cloudy no matter where you are or who you book with. Three nights in Rovaniemi beats one night in Saariselkä on the arithmetic alone, and that is worth more than picking the theoretically darkest town.
Common questions
Can I stay in Rovaniemi and still see the northern lights?
Yes. The aurora season runs late August to early April across Finnish Lapland, and Rovaniemi tours exist precisely to drive you out of the city's light. What you cannot do is sit in the city centre and expect to see much. Go further north and your per-night odds improve, but they never become a guarantee anywhere.
Which base has the most tours to choose from?
Rovaniemi, comfortably. Eighteen of the twenty-four tours listed on this site depart from Rovaniemi, five from Levi. More operators competing generally means more departure times and keener prices too.
Is Levi worth it if I do not ski?
Probably not, unless someone in your group does. Without skiing, Levi is a smaller activity market than Rovaniemi with no Santa Claus Village and a harder flight. Its case rests almost entirely on the slopes and on somewhat darker skies.
Do I need to pick just one?
No, and splitting works well over a week: a couple of nights in Rovaniemi for the village and the widest activity choice, then north for the aurora. Just count the transfer time honestly. Lapland distances are longer than the map suggests and winter driving is slow.
