Rovaniemi Airport handled 1,120,022 passengers in 2025, up 18.4 per cent in a single year. For a regional airport inside the Arctic Circle that is a remarkable number, and it has quietly changed the economics of a Lapland holiday more than anything an operator has done.

What Is Actually Running This Winter?

The Ryanair service is the significant one. Five months, daily, from a London airport. That is not a seasonal novelty, it is scheduled infrastructure, and it covers the shoulder months where the value sits.

Why This Matters More Than It Sounds
Because for years the charter operator was solving a real access problem. There was no straightforward way for a British family to reach Rovaniemi, so the package was not just convenient, it was the route. That is no longer true.
A daily scheduled flight changes what a package has to justify. It can no longer sell access, because access is on sale at Stansted every day for five months. What remains is genuine: financial protection, transfers, a fixed programme, and a rep on the ground when the weather breaks your week.

What It Does To Prices
Competition on a route pushes fares down, and British Airways listing London to Rovaniemi from about £192 each way for December is the clearest evidence. That is a full-service carrier's published fare on a peak-month date.

Put the top row against the bottom two and the arithmetic of an independent trip starts to work in a way it did not five years ago. The hotel line is now the largest variable, not the flight.
The Catch In The Dates
Two of the four routes stop in the third week of March, and one runs only over Christmas. If you are planning the March trip that the snow data recommends, check the route is still flying.
This is the practical trap in an otherwise good story. Snow depth in northern Finland peaks around mid-March at 60 to 90 cm, per the Finnish Meteorological Institute, which makes late March the best-value week of the winter. But easyJet's Gatwick service ends 24 March and Ryanair's 27 March.

What It Does Not Change
The weather, the aurora odds, and the fact that a single night is still a coin flip. Cheaper flights get you there; they do not get you a clear sky.
The aurora season itself runs late August to early April per Visit Finland, and no route change touches that. More affordable access mostly means people can afford more nights, which is genuinely the thing that improves an aurora trip. The Season Dates, And The Gaps Between Them
The four routes do not run to the same calendar, and the differences are large. Two of the best months to visit sit at the edges where capacity is thinnest.

Ryanair's window is the widest by a clear margin and the only genuinely daily service, which makes it the backbone of any independent short trip. British Airways runs the narrowest, sitting entirely inside the Christmas peak.
