The Anatomy Of An £820 Lapland Package
What a UK charter operator is actually charging you for when it publishes a Lapland package from £820, and which parts of that price you could not replicate yourself.
Thomas Cook publishes seven nights in Rovaniemi with flights and hotel from £820 per person. Transun publishes flights, transfers and full board from £1,029 per adult. Those are large numbers, and the reflex reaction is that somebody is making a killing. The breakdown is more interesting than that.

What Is Actually Inside The Price?
Four cost lines and two things you cannot buy separately: financial protection, and someone whose job it is to fix your holiday when the weather breaks it.
| Component | Can you buy it yourself? | What it costs alone |
|---|---|---|
| Return flights | Yes | From about £192 each way from London |
| Airport transfer | Yes | Taxi or shuttle |
| Hotel | Yes | €150 to €280 a night in Rovaniemi |
| Meals, half or full board | Yes | Your own spend |
| Thermal gear for the whole stay | Partly | Operators lend it per activity |
| A fixed activity programme | Yes, individually | €89 to €125 per person per activity |
| Financial protection | No | Not available separately |
| A rep on the ground | No | Not available separately |
The bottom two rows are the honest core of the charter proposition. Everything above them you can assemble; those two you cannot.
Where Does The Margin Actually Sit?
Less in the activities than people assume, and more in the flight. A charter seat on a dedicated Lapland rotation costs more per seat than a scheduled ticket booked early, and the operator is carrying the risk of filling that aircraft.
That risk is real. A charter operator commits to an aircraft on a fixed date months ahead. If it does not fill, the operator eats it. That risk premium is baked into every seat, and it is the single largest gap between the packaged and unpackaged price.
The second gap is the fixed programme. A package charges every guest for the same set of activities, which means you pay for the ones you would have skipped. Booking direct, a family who wants huskies and one aurora night pays for huskies and one aurora night. Our full cost comparison runs the arithmetic on both.
What Has Changed Recently
Scheduled competition. Four direct UK routes now serve Rovaniemi for the 2026/27 winter, and the airport grew 18.4 per cent in a single year. That is what made booking direct a genuine option rather than a theoretical one.
| Airline | From | Season |
|---|---|---|
| Ryanair | London Stansted, daily | 25 Oct 2026 to 27 Mar 2027 |
| easyJet | London Gatwick | 11 Nov 2026 to 24 Mar 2027 |
| easyJet | Newcastle, Wed and Sun | From 25 Nov 2026 |
| British Airways | London Gatwick, Mon and Fri | 4 Dec 2026 to 4 Jan 2027 |
Ten years ago the charter operator was solving a genuine access problem: there was no easy way for a British family to reach Rovaniemi. Today there is a daily Ryanair service for five months of the year. The access problem has largely gone, which means the package now has to justify itself on convenience and protection rather than on being the only route in. Our airports guide covers all of them.
What Each Traveller Is Really Buying
The same £820 buys very different value depending on who you are, which is why blanket advice about packages is useless.
| Traveller | What the package is worth to them | What they lose by taking it |
|---|---|---|
| Family of four, school holidays | A great deal, bulk buying plus zero logistics | Flexibility on activities |
| Couple, flexible dates | Little, they can beat it on price | Money, mostly |
| First-timers with young children | A great deal, the logistics are the hard part | Choice of aurora nights |
| Aurora-focused travellers | Little, one scheduled night is a coin flip | The ability to rebook a cloudy night |
| Anyone nervous about winter travel | Genuinely a lot, the rep is the product | Some money |
| Second-time visitors | Very little, they know what they want | Money and control |
The aurora row is the one that most often surprises people, and it is covered properly in our aurora guide.
Is The Package Ever The Better Buy?
Yes, and more often than the internet suggests. For four people on fixed school-holiday dates, peak flights and a peak-rate hotel close most of the gap, and the operator's bulk buying is real.
The saving from booking direct is largest for exactly the traveller charter operators are not built around: a couple with flexible dates who will do the planning. It is smallest for the family of four in the Christmas fortnight, which is the charter operator's core market and where its buying power actually shows.
There is also a scenario nobody prices: the week when the weather turns. A packaged traveller loses two activities and phones a rep. An independent traveller loses two activities, gets their money back under free cancellation, and spends an evening trying to rebook into a full week. Our booking guide is blunt about that difference.
What The £820 Does Not Include
Santa. Or rather, it charges you nothing extra for something that costs nothing anyway.
Entry to Santa Claus Village is free and meeting Santa in his office is free, per the Santa Claus Village information service and Visit Rovaniemi. The village is 8 km from Rovaniemi city centre and reachable by local bus.
That is worth knowing whichever way you buy. On a package it is a headline inclusion that costs the operator only the coach. Independently, it is a bus fare. The official photo package, from €55 for up to five people, is the only part that carries a price, and our village guide sets out the rest.
A Worked Example, With The Numbers We Can Actually Stand Behind
Two adults, five nights in March, booking direct. The point of this is not to produce a total, because your flights and hotel are yours. It is to show which lines you control and which you do not.
| Line | What the published figures say | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|
| Flights | From about £192 each way from London on British Airways for December 2026 | You, through dates and how early you book |
| Hotel | Rovaniemi averages around €150 a night, roughly €280 at the December to February peak | You, mostly through the month |
| Activities | Live price on each listing, priced per person | You, entirely, through how many you book |
| Thermal gear | Lent by the operator for each activity | Nobody, it is included |
| Santa Claus Village entry | Free, and meeting Santa is free | Nobody, there is nothing to pay |
| Financial protection | Not available to buy separately | Nobody, this is what you gave up |
Two rows carry the whole argument. The hotel line nearly doubles across the calendar, which makes the month the single most powerful lever a private buyer has. The activities line is fully discretionary, which is why a family that wants huskies and one aurora night pays for huskies and one aurora night rather than for a fixed programme.
We deliberately do not print a total here. The activity prices sit on the operators' own listings and move with date, group size and currency, and a made-up total would be exactly the kind of number this site refuses to invent.
How To Price Your Own Version In Fifteen Minutes
Do it properly or do not do it at all. A vague sense that direct is cheaper is not a comparison, and for one type of traveller it is simply wrong. Four lookups settle it.
| Step | What to look up | What you are testing |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Return flights on your actual dates, for everyone travelling | Whether the peak-date premium eats the saving |
| 2 | A comparable hotel for the same nights | The line that moves most across the calendar |
| 3 | The specific activities you would genuinely book | Not the package's programme, yours |
| 4 | The package quote for the same dates | The only fair comparison |
The third step is where most people cheat without noticing. Pricing every activity in the charter itinerary and comparing totals answers a question you do not care about, because half those activities are ones you would have skipped. Price what you actually want.
The second step is where the answer usually lives. Rovaniemi hotel rates average around €150 a night and reach roughly €280 at the December to February peak, so the same comparison run for March and for Christmas week produces two different verdicts.
Do that and the result is generally clear: a couple with flexible dates wins comfortably by booking direct, and a family of four on fixed Christmas dates often does not. That is not a fudge. It is the actual shape of the answer, and it is why "book direct and save" is advice that needs a condition attached.
The Honest Summary
The £820 is not a rip-off, it is a bundle with two components you cannot buy separately and one large risk premium on the flight. Whether it is right for you depends almost entirely on how many of you there are and how flexible your dates are.
Price both. Do it properly, with the flight, the hotel and the specific activities you would actually book rather than a vague sense that direct is cheaper. For a couple in March, direct usually wins comfortably. For four people at Christmas, it often does not.
